Cartagena Chivas Tours

This was the party get down tour. The Chivas tour start at 8:00 p.m. as soon as they picked us up from our apartment. We were one of the 1st people to board the party bus so, we had a quick tour of the city picking up people at all the various hotels. We had live music on board which kept our booty's moving. We didn't know the songs but everyone else on board was singing along, playing maracas and we could just feel the energy onboard.

This was our
party bus which
chauffeured us around town.
The bus was open air and it was
happening.
Each row was given a bottle of rum and bottle of 7up. Once we were through with our bottles we'd just past them to the front and they were replaced with new ones. Woohoo!
Wish I could
remember the
name of the Rum
It was good!
New friends from Venezuela
Most of the crowd were from Chile,
Peru, Argentina
and Venezuela
Everyone was having a great time jamming to the live music on board
These guys were part of our party bus and kept the rhythm moving.
Part of our tour included stopping
at a park where
some street dancers
entertained us.
My Mom is going to hate these next pictures. While in the town park; I had the opportunity to hold a Sloth. He was so stinking cute and I just couldn't help myself. Look at how cute these little creatures are. They spend 90% of their lives sleeping but this one awake and so lovable.
What a cool
experience.
From the park we boarded the bus and headed to a bar for Salsa dancing.
The bar was in this old Colonial building. It was beautiful.
Lot of dancing as you can see. We had a fantastic time.
We were so wound up from all the energy that we weren't ready to go home after our tour ended. In route to our apartment happens to be Rio Casino. We decided to play some Blackjack and chill out for a bit. Luck was on our side and we took a little extra cash home.
This particular casino was really nice. It's very small but not crowded. Best part; no smoking allowed. What more can I say. We enjoyed our evening and looking forward to our next tour.
Enjoy your day.
Much love from B&B

Cartagena Colombia

Hello everyone! We've made it safely to Cartagena and have been here a couple of days now. Our first night was spent in a hostel ($25/nt, private room, american cable, internet and very nice). Hostels here aren't like the ones back in the states. We went into several of them to check them out and most of them were very clean and offered all the amenities listed above and cheap. But why stay in a hostel when you can rent an apartment on a daily basis. We walked a good 6 hours looking at apartments and we found this great little apartment literally on the beach and fully furnished for $45/night. Can't beat that. We have a kitchen, living room, bedroom and 2 full baths plus we're on the 5th floor with a balcony that overlooks the ocean and partial glimpse of our pool. O'yes, there's a pool. We're only going to be here another 4 nights but it's nice to spread out rather than hangout in a small one room place. O' get this....The TV in our apartment is HUGE (52" plasma). So far we've walked miles and miles getting to know a little bit about Cartagena. It's very pretty here and not a large city. There's miles of beaches, a colonial feel in some parts while others have towering modern buildings. The people here have been very friendly. In fact, I met this lady, Alicia at the airport while standing in the Customs line and we communicated as best we could. My Spanish is a little different from the Colombian Spanish but no problem. She was so nice. She gave me her phone number and told us to call her if we had any questions about Cartagena or any problems. She said her husband spoke English very well and we could call them anytime. I may surprise her and give her a ring to meet up for dinner. She reminded me of my Aunt Luz. We all know how much I love my Tia Luz! We found they have several casinos in the area. One not too far from our apartment...YIKES! Bob says he'll put a leash on me if I get out of hand. We walked into Rio today to check it out. Their sign is very similar to the Rio sign in Las Vegas. They had table games of Texas Hold'em, Black Jack, Roulette and tons of slot machines. Bob can't get too mad if I play a few hands of Hold'em or Black Jack. Minimum bets start at 5,000 pesos. Which is equivalent to $2.50 USD. I'm having a little hard time dealing with such large numbers. It's crazy. Our grocery bill was 1 Million Pesos.... The exchange rate is $2075 pesos to $1 USD. Bob told me to drop the last 3 zeros and divide by 2 to get close to the USD. So, 5,000 (5 divided by 2). Works for me. Well, I took my first fall today. I'm already sore. I can just imagine how I'm going to feel the next day or 2. I was being nice and move out of the way for a group of ladies walking on the sidewalk. I decided to step up onto a curb and lost my balance. When will I learn...I have no balance. That one hurt. It took me a minute or 5 to get back up. My left ankle and my right calf will be bruised. I tried to break my fall by placing my hand down and that send instant pain to my elbow. But, I guess it could have been worse. I could have easily broken my arm. That's what I get for being nice. At least the ladies I was moving out of the way for stopped to help me and didn't leave till I got up. I'll just take a couple of Naproxyn and a hot shower. If I need to hang out by the pool to take it easy....guess, that's what I'll have to do. We did check into some "tourist" things to do. There's an excursion to a volcano where we can take warm mud baths. They say it's therapeutic. I'd like to do the city tour by bus also. We walk all over but doing that only covers so much area and since we're only here for a few days. That may something for us to consider. There are island tours to do as well for snorkeling but, for some reason Bob & I aren't feeling it. But who knows what tomorrow brings. We'll keep you posted. I'll start posting pictures as soon as I take some. We love you very much. Hope you have a wonderful day. Bonnie & Bob

Orlando Florida

We've had 3 wonderful nights here in Orlando. We haven't done a whole lot really. We thought about hitting some of the theme parks but opted out. The weather has been sunny & Africa hot in the mornings but by 2:00 p.m. heavy thunderstorms were in full force. I was so enjoying it. We had to make a mad dash into McDonald's one afternoon due to the heavy rains and wow. We had never seen a McDonald's of this magnitude before. It was amazing. Listen to this....in addition to the normal items you can find at Mickey D's, they also serve numerous other items you could order off their "Gourmet" Menu. Here's a few examples; create your own pasta station (ex: Chicken Garlic Alfredo or Marina Shrimp); Pizzas, Paninis, Wraps, Chicken Quesadillas, Meatball Parmesan Sandwiches and delectable desserts (cakes, pies, over a dozen ice cream flavors & more). So that was just the food choices....next was the arcade. I believe Houston was the first to have a 2 story McDonald's. Orlando has the largest of them all. The arcade included 2 lanes of bowling for the kids, tattoo station, character drawings and all the video games that you'd normally find in an arcade. Yes, as you can tell...I'm easily amused. We did spend plenty of time researching hotels and things to do in Cartagena and Santa Marta. We've also read several blogs of others who have traveled there. We are really looking forward to visiting Colombia. It sounds amazing. We can't wait to share our ventures with you too. Our plane leaves tomorrow (Sunday) at 8:30 a.m. It's only a 2 1/2 hour flight from here. I'm not sure what time zone they are in but will let you know when we find out. We should have all our ducks in a row now and shouldn't have any problems leaving this time. We'll be in touch and we're looking forward to our next venture. Love you - B&B

Another Lesson We've Learned

We're still learning so much as we travel. Just when we think we have things figured out; we have a set back. We should be in Cartagena Colombia by now but we didn't do the homework needed to board the plane. We've had our One-Way tickets booked for a few months now on Spirit Airlines. We left Houston on a Wednesday (07/09) to Orlando Florida. We were spending the night here and board a plane early morning on Thursday to Colombia. When we got to the check-in counter we were told that we needed to have booked a return flight to the States. What? We're Americans we can come and go as we please. We don't need to check in with our government. We tried to explain to the ticket agent that we were traveling South America for the next 5 months. We have no intentions of staying in Colombia the whole time. We do know and understand that each country has regulations as to how long we can stay without getting special permissions from the Embassy. We told the agent that we would be traveling on by bus and returning to the states from Argentina at a date we weren't sure of. Well, that didn't fly. We could not board the plane without a "returned" flight. We were so upset as you could imagine. Bob & I did some research and made a few calls. Even though we as Americans can come and go as we wish; some countries want to know where and how long we plan to visit and some require some documentation as to us leaving the country. We can understand that. But, all the airlines require return flights in their policy. We still think this is a crazy policy. As long as we follow the visiting countries regulations we shouldn't have to book a returned ticket till we're ready. But, anyway- Bob found a loop-hole. We now have a "returned ticket" out of Colombia back to the States. We booked a full fare, unrestricted and fully refundable ticket. We now have proof to provide the airlines that we are returning as they require. But as soon as we get to Colombia we will cancel that flight, get our money back and continue our travels thru South America. I tell ya....we learn something new all the time. When we left the States to Mexico by bus we didn't have these problems. So, we're still in Orlando Fl. We're scheduled to fly out this coming Sunday. In the meantime; we're having a great time here taking in some sites and I have some down time to catch up on my blogging. As everyone knows; you are more than welcome to join us at any point. We plan to visit Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile & Argentina this next leg of our journey. We'd love to see ya if you can swing. We'll post our next destination as soon as we get things figured out. Best deals are found at the last minute, ya know. Maybe we'll see you very soon. Take care and much love to all. B&B

Bob's Family Reunion - Dallas

The Scott Family Reunion was hosted by Jack & Cheryl Spence in Dallas Texas. Each year a family member takes on the responsibility of hosting this special event and organizing all the dinners, activities and hotel accommodations. The reunion takes place over a long weekend. Most will arrive on a Thursday and we all leave on a Sunday. So, you can imagine lots of prep work goes into this production. Jack & Cheryl did a bang up job keeping the whole family entertained. Activities included a wine tour, a train ride to Ft. Worth for shopping, a night of bumper cars & putt-putt, family games of LCR, Dominoes, Uno, Bingo and a family auction to make money for the next reunion. Not to mention all the food & beverages we had all weekend. Thank you Jack & Cheryl ... fun was had by all. Texas Tour

Can't believe our visit started May 21st in Houston...here we are July 8th and our time has flown by so fast. We had a fantastic time visiting all our family and friends. Not that we were able to see absolutely everyone but we gave it our all in trying. So where did we spend all our time?

We spent time in Houston celebrating Sandy's 60th Birthday, celebrated Trechell's 40th Birthday, enjoyed Happy Hours w/my co-workers of DCP, my Hastings High School Friends, hosted a pizza party at Selena's, and enjoyed quality time with our family.

Family and Friends

Well we've been in Houston now just a little over 2 1/2 weeks and our time is flying by. We've been having a blast seeing all our family and some friends. Bob & I have been truly blessed to have so many good friends in our lives. Our social schedule has been jammed packed with milestone birthday parties; My Step Dad's 60th, My best friend, Trechell's 40th, and my Grandmother's 90th. We've attended BBQ's, had a fabulous time w/ our friends Pete & Nancy at their compound, fished at Lake Livingston w/ Chris & Jodi, and I hooked up with one of my best friends from High School, Stephanie Porter. She and I hadn't seen one another in 18 years. We picked up right where we left off and didn't miss a beat. Just made me realize how much I have missed her in my life. She's one of those positive people and full of life. We still have a family reunion to attend in Dallas, a trip to Austin to visit more family & friends, and our 4th of July will be spent in Rockport. So, you see we're making the most of our time here in Texas and having a great time. We'll be heading to Corpus today to celebrate my Grandmother's 90th. Can't to give her a big hug. She's awesome. Plus, I'll be able to spend time with my family living down there. We've definitely we need 2 computers between Bob & I. He's been so busy researching our next traveling ventures that my time on the computer is minimal. I have tons a pictures to post and lots to talk about but until we buy another computer I'm hosed. It's been good being home and we're enjoying our time here. We hope everyone is doing well too. Until Bob forfeits the computer! Bonnie.

We are safe!

Hi to everyone. Thank you for your concerns in our travels down to Honduras. Unfortunately, Honduras experienced an earthquake 7.1 but fortunately for us we've made it back to the states safely. We have checked in with our friends on the islands and most had minimal damage but pooped in their pants at 3:30 a.m. From what we are hearing it was quite a scare. We haven't heard from our friends in Roatan and they apparently were closer to the Epicenter. We pray that no injuries occurred and minimal damage was done to their properties. We did make it back to the states last Thursday. I couldn't blog about it since we were surprising my stepdad for his 60th birthday. I wish I could have told my mom but she can't keep a secret to save her life. (Although she states otherwise). He was pleasantly surprised when we crashed his party and enjoyed ourselves with the rest of the family. So far our visit has been very smooth even though we're trying to shuffle around and see as much family and friends as possible. But we still haven't seen my Dad yet. Soon, very soon! We've been to Louisiana to do a little gambling. Luck wasn't on my side. Bob had better luck than I did playing video poker and sitting at the bar. I guess I should have done the same. Being that it was Memorial weekend; the table games were higher than usual. $15.00 tables were few and far between. After lunch, the minimum jumped to $25.00. Yikes. Lost my money quickly in 3 card poker. Never could get on a blackjack table; the place was packed. But we had a good time gambling with my family. My brother is a riot and I've really missed him. Other than that; we are doing very well. Bob is trying to figure out where we fly to from here. It will be somewhere in South America. We plan to hang down there for 5-6 months and seeing as much as possible. As always anyone is more than welcome to join us. We hope everyone is doing well and that we get to see you soon. Lots of love - B&B

Guatemala was Beautiful

We've been having such a great time and very little time for blogging. Yikes so much to catch you up on. Guatemala was absolutely beautiful! When we left Belize our first destination in Guatemala was Flores. Flores is actually an island on the northern part of Guatemala. For those who are not sure where Guatemala is...It borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. The terrain in Guatemala is mountainous thru out the country and Spanish is the official language. They really don't have much of a "bus" system, we traveled by shuttles; small 15 passenger vans usually and they drive horribly. Mexico taxi drivers have nothing on the Guatemalans. I tried every word I knew in Spanish to get them to slow down; nothing worked. I just said lots of prayers while traveling city to city. Thank God we arrived in one piece at each location. Flores is a small slow paced village built in the middle of Lake Petén Itzá, . There are plenty of restaurants, guesthouses and small hotels on this island and the streets are made of Cobblestone. The lake was crystal clear and plenty of swimmers enjoying the cool water. The red TukTuk is a taxi. Very cute! Town square A view from our hotel balcony. Looking across the lake The little white boat is called a Launcha; their water taxi. The middle of the city are colorful houses This was a beautiful city.

We stayed in Flores and arranged for a shuttle to take us to Tikal Ruins. By shuttle the ride was an hour and we were informed it's best to get to the park early in the morning to see some wild life and it wouldn't be so hot while climbing the ruins. With that being said we were picked up at 5:30 a.m. The ride wasn't too bad. We had a decent driver but I had to sit next to this guy who stunk. Why do "backpackers" stink so much? There's no reason for that funk. The kid must have stayed up late because he felt the need to put his nappy dreads on my shoulder. I kept nudging him but it was a constant battle the whole way up to Tikal. Once we got to Tikal we did our own tour. Bob's foot was still healing from the cut he got in Belize and we didn't want to slow down the groups. We took our time and climb some amazing ruins. We've been to several ruins thru out Mexico and these by far were the best. Bob's not going to let some little cut on the bottom of his foot slow him down. The pathways to the ruins were very cool. We did climb most of these ruins to the top. I thought this was a cool tree. Lots of ruins to explore
Bob had the injury but it was I that slowed us down. I'm terrified of heights.
But I made it! From Flores we did find a bus line that went to Guatemala City. We decide to travel at night and not hassle with another night stay at a hotel so we left at 9:00 p.m. We got to the bus pickup a little early and we were excited about the nice bus waiting for us. We tried to board and they said, "nope not your bus". When will we learn? We've been traveling all thru Mexico by bus and we knew Primera Classe doesn't mean 1st Class as we know it to be in the states. Well same holds true in Guatemala. We needed to ask for the Luxury Class which would have only been a few dollars more per person. UGH! The bus we boarded wasn't the worst we've been on but the seats didn't recline, no light in the bathroom and we made more stops along the way picking up locals. We slept most of the way so it really wasn't a big deal. We arrived in Guatemala City around 6:00 a.m. to catch a shuttle to Antigua. This leg was only an hour long in a full passenger van. Again, we are stuck sitting behind stinky tourist. These guys were young and Americans. One of them kept scratching his head and checking his nails for dirt, bugs, or picking a scab ..Gross! I'm thinking if you would bathe and wash your hair it may not itch. I don't get it.
When we arrived in Antigua around 7:30 a.m. we had no place to go. We went to a coffee house which had WIFI to research hotels, hostels or even renting a house for the week. Our friends were coming later in the day to meet up with us and there's a total of 8 to accommodate. We chatted with a realtor and hoped that he may have something in our budget ($20/day/person). He had one place that would accommodate all of us and remained in our budget. We hit the jackpot! Not only did our $1000/week rental include a room for all of us but it included a cook, maid and gardener. This house was awesome, huge and in the heart of town. The 1st round of guests to arrive was Monica & Luis. The expressions on their face when they walked in was priceless. "this place is ours for the week"? John, Andy, Lena & Diana didn't arrive till 8:00 ish. They too were shocked that we found this place. Beats any hotel or hostel we were thinking of staying at. This place was monstrous. We had plenty of room to spread out and had the dining room/living room to gather around.

Monica turned 37 while vacationing in Guatemala so how can we not host a party in this fantastic home. John was salivating at the opportunity to fill the dining table with food. So, he and I prepared a birthday party menu. Nothing fancy just a bunch of finger foods and cocktails. With Irma's help we learned to make Papusa's (Guatemalan dish) made of corn tortillas. Irma made the dough for us and we helped hand rolling the dough, filling with chicken, beans & cheese and rolling the dough again to only flatten it out with the mixture inside and frying. Looked like a thick tortilla and all the filling was flatten in the dough. Then we made quesadillas, bite size sandwiches w/nice deli meats (roast beef and porkloin), stuffed jalapenos, 7 layer dip, salsa and roasted bell pepper sauce. We had about 20 guests.
Happy Birthday Monica!
Monica's girlfriends from Guatemala City came in.
As I had mentioned in a previous email, we climbed Pacaya Volcano and came very close to the flow of lava. The hike was about 45 mins and some places were pretty intense. My heart rate shot up; no doubt.
Beautiful views thru out our hike
Look closely. Theres a large group of people walking in the valleys. That's our path to the lava.
Here we go. So close the rubber on the bottom of yours shoes begin to melt.
Bob put his walking stick in the lava and the stick catches fire immediately
I needed my own private guide since I only had sandals on. He helped me along
the way
I should say HELD me up most of the way. The ash we were walking on was loose and sharp. There were several people who fell and had some nice cuts as they were leaving the volcano. But our group was tough. Bob & I were the only ones who fell but only on the path down the volcano. Only our pride hurt...well, not mine. I'm accustomed to falling.
The heat was intense But pretty spectacular
I have to say I'm glad we did the tour on the day we went because the day after our tour; Guatemala experienced an earthquake. (6.2 on the scale). I would have hated to have been on the volcano during that time. It was bad enough when we felt the tremors at the house. Bob & I were sitting on the veranda playing BackGammon while the others were showering or sleeping. I can tell you those that were sleeping were rudely awaken and we saw them downstairs within minutes. David was laughing at us as he saw the shock in our eyes and thinking what the hell was that?
Did I tell you that the house had spirits? O'yes. My first night I sensed it. Then they were playing games with me. I had closed the shutter in the bedroom and went to the bathroom and heard the creaking of the shutter. I walked back into the bedroom and saw the shutter was open again. Not just slightly open but open all the way. At first I just thought it had popped open...no problem. I closed again tightly and waited. I went back to the bathroom and whaLa...the shutter opened. I could feel the presence of someone. It was weird but I wasn't scared. This happened the 2nd night I was there with a different shutter. I didn't say anything to anyone. For all I know it's just a faulty shutter although we had no problems with it the rest of the time. Then, one of Monica's friends had spent the night. You should have seen the terror in her eyes the next morning. Someone had shaken her bed and woke her up by stroking her cheek. Luis who was also in the room heard the bed shaking but thought Mitzi was dreaming didn't think anything about it. In the morning, Mitzi was wide awake and ready to go downstairs. She told us what had happened. I told her I knew we had a ghost / spirits whatever you want to call it. Luis said he had felt something too a few nights before. Nobody said anything to anyone and Thank God, Monica said had she known she would have had to find another place to stay. We talked Irma and asked if she's ever experienced anything before but she had not. Although there was a family who booked the house for a week and left after one night saying they felt the ghosts.
We had lots of fun eating, drinking, dancing, playing pool, and playing poker. So far we have found Texas Hold'em in every country we've traveled. Bob has been a big winner in the last 3 places he's played. Glad he's covering my losses.

From Antigua we took a shuttle to Panajachel which is one of the villages on Lake Atitlan. Again we are traveling thru mountains and down widing roads. The fumes from the van more than anything was making me queasy. No A/C on the shuttle van so we had the windows open and I was sitting near the back of the van. John was in the very back didn't feel so well also. But we managed without getting sick on the 2 1/2 hour ride.
We didn't stay long in Panajachel once we got off the shuttle. We had a fantastic lunch there and a few explored briefly thru the village. But our ultimate destination was San Pedro La Laguna which we took a water taxi to get there.
Lake Atitlan is breathtaking and one of the deepest lakes in the world. The lake came about by a huge volcanic eruption dating 85,000 years ago. It's a fresh water lake with no river outlets and is surrounded by 3 volcanos. The lake is surrounded by Mayan Villages and most have their own languages. We've found the Mayan people are very friendly and always smiling.
San Pedro La Laguna is one of the village on the lake with a population around 13,000. Very laid back community. When we arrived, the hotel we had booked a reservation for was just up the hill from the water taxi. It wasn't a bad hotel but it was at the busiest intersection in town. So, Bob & Monica went around to a few other hotels to see what was available. They found one just up the road, cheaper, newer and had a wonderful balcony. We moved. The hotel we stayed at was called Casa Lola and was costing us $15.00 a night. Gotta like that. The town is small so where ever we stayed we were in walking distance of restaurants, pubs and the lake. We had some of the best food in this town and so cheap. We went to a restaurant called Dinoz where they offered a fantastic menu and a movie at 8:30. We found poker being played at Budha's. Bob cleaned everyone out and we had the best food Asian food. The 3 nights we spent in this town was cool and very relaxing.

Fantastic storms over the lake
Individuals lined the streets selling their produce, fruit and yes, live chickens

Bob pondering what real estate costs here.
Water taxis
Unfortunately our stay in San Pedro had to come to an end. We all boarded our shuttle back to Antigua. We decided to take the shuttle leaving San Pedro vs taking a water taxi back to Panajachel which lengthen our trip to 3 hours but we had a much nicer shuttle. The only thing is that while heading back we had so much weight on the shuttle that we couldn't make it up one of the hills. Half the passengers had to get out while the rest of us rode the up the hill. Luis & Monica were the only ones out of our group that walked.
Watching them as we enjoyed our ride up the hill.
Monica & Luis we'll wait for you up top. We made it safely to Antigua where we spent one night there before making our way to Honduras. This time we were splurging. We could have gone the cheap route and took a shuttle to the border (5 hours) before boarding Hedman Atlas bus. No, we've had enough of the shuttle scene. We all decided to take the shuttle back to Guatemala City (45 min ride) and then board a nice big bus for the journey ahead. Bob and I even forked out more money to ride Luxury style. Hedman Atlas bus lines....they have the 1st 10 seats reserved for "luxury" seating. Meaning we only had 3 seats going across vs. 4 making our seats much larger. Plus we got a few more snacks than the guys behind us. Our journey to Honduras is 15 hours and we wanted more leg room to recline and sleep. Our ride was very comfortable all the way thru.
That's Guatemala in a nutshell. A beautiful country.
More to come...stay tuned.
Much love from Bonnie & Bob
