Guanajuato

We've been in Guanajuato 4 days now and this place is absolutely beautiful. As of right now, it is my favorite town so far in Mexico. Unfortunately what it lacks for me is the ocean. I really miss hearing the waves crashing and the sunsets. But this little colonial town is spectacular. The population here approx 75,000. The weather has been on the cooler side. I would guess so since we are 6500 feet above sea level.

But the days are in the mid 70's and the evenings are a bit nippy at mid 40's. Not much English is spoken here so, I'm really forced to practice my Spanish. Bob is learning the language fast too. At this point, he enjoys practicing at restaurants and is really good about asking how much something cost. Which means his numbers are very good.
The town is very is
very colorful and hilly.
Not to mention
jammed packed.
In between all
these homes & businesses
are cobblestone streets,
pedestrian walkways, and the
most fabulous tunnels
I've ever seen.
The city was originally built over the Guanajuato River which flowed thru the tunnels. Today, the river is dammed up and redirected into underground caverns. As I mentioned before the tunnels are very cool. They are now paved, lit and walls are made out of cobblestone. Some tunnels feature unbelievable murals. Unfortunately, my pictures are too dark to post.
The streets are generally
filled w/people at all
hours.
Fabulous Churches.
And so many of them
in a small area.
Inside one of the
churches.
I've lost track as to
which one this
is. One of the plazas.
The landscaping is
fantastic. Poinsettias
grow wild here.
Lots of restaurants
surround the plazas.
Along w/street
vendors.
Of course there's
a Mercado to
buy fresh meat,
fish, and veggies Not to mention
clothes & souvenirs
University of
Guanajuato.
There are approx
20,000 students
enrolled at the
University. A
new campus was
built just outside
the Centro area.
As you can see we are having a great and enjoying this city.
We've been on a few tours, eaten some fabulous foods, and even caught a movie. We hadn't done that in years. Unfortunately for Bob, I chose the movie. A "chick flick" no less. The Women. Bob was huffing & fidgeting in his seat. After the movie he mentioned there were absolutely no men actors not even a gay man. He really wanted to see another after that one that involved blowing up something. (hahaha)
We'll be in touch. Miss everyone!

It's beautiful. I was showing Teresa your pictures. She asked if you are going to see the mummies? Let me know! We miss you like crazy. Have fun.
