The Mummy Museum

Check this out! This was an incredible museum and a little creepy. "El Museo de Las Momias"

These mummies were discovered in
a cemetery called Guanajuato. And
dug up between 1896 - 1958.
Soil conditions & dry climate caused
the bodies to dry out naturally
before decomposing.
Local law required families to pay a Grave Tax - One time fee of 170 pesos or 20 pesos per yearly for the less wealthy. If the tax was not paid, the bodies were exhumed and placed in a tomb for a family to claim. If no one claimed, then the mummified body went to the museum.
There are 119
Mummies on
displayed
The mummy below is said that she was buried alive due to the position of her arms and the scratches that were on her forehead. They thought she had died to Cholera and buried her
immediately in fear of the disease spreading.
What a horrible
death!
"La Momia mas pequeno del Mundo"
Worlds smallest
mummy.
Mother
& baby said to die
during C-Section
Poor little
thing.
Infants are generally
buried w/a full garb
to made like a
princess or king.
We found some of the
mummies to have
facial hair, pubic hair,
some with clothes
while some
without.
All had their mouths
open due to the
natural process of
the muscles
relaxing.
This lady still
had a full head
of hair. This museum generates millions of dollars a year. While its the most expensive at 50 pesos to enter...it's very cheap in the realm of things. (less than $5.oo) and we highly recommend to any travelers coming here.
